چکیده

Four obligately photoautotrophic blue-green algae were shown to assimilate acetate. This reaction was light dependent and was greatly decreased in the absence of carbon dioxide. Acetate was incorporated mainly into the ethanol extractable (lipid) fraction of the organisms and into the protein fraction. Only four amino acids (glutamate, proline, arginine, leucine) were significantly radioactive as a result of the incorporation of (I-) or (2-)14Cacetate. Partial degradations of amino acids derived from specifically labelled acetate and enzyme assays on crude cell-free extracts of Anacystis nidulans support the operation of established pathways for the biosynthesis of these amino acids. Growth of blue-green algae was not significantly affected by the presence of moderate concentrations of the sodium salts of the lower fatty acids, with the exception of propionate, low concentrations of which inhibited growth.

Role of reduced exogenous organic compounds in the physiology of the blue-green bacteria (algae): photoheterotrophic growth of an "autotrophic" blue-green bacterium.

The unicellular blue-green bacterium Agmenellum quadruplicatum strain BG-1 was found to be capable of rapid photoheterotrophic growth but unable to grow in the dark on a variety of reduced organic substrates. The generation time on glycerol was 12 h, and on CO(2), 3 h. Glycerol carbon was converted into cellular carbon with a very high efficiency. This high efficiency of carbon conversion, the ...

The metabolism of acetate by the blue-green algae, Anabaena variabilis and Anacystis nidulans.

The utilization of acetate by blue-green algae was examined and the activities of enzymes involved in its metabolism measured. Although acetate did not stimulate the endogenous respiration of these organisms, the oxidation of acetate was followed by the rate of release of [14C] carbon dioxide from [I-~~CC] and [2-l4CC] sodium acetate. Similarly, sodium acetate did not alter the rate of growth o...

Biochemical basis of obligate autotrophy in blue-green algae and thiobacilli.

Differential rates of incorporation of sugars, organic acids, and amino acids during autotrophic growth of several blue-green algae and thiobacilli have been determined. In obligate autotrophs (both blue-green algae and thiobacilli), exogenously furnished organic compounds make a very small contribution to cellular carbon; acetate, the most readily incorporated compound of those studied, contri...
